Twenty-eight years ago, I left my job as a journalist so I could write a novel.
I was sure the words would flow out of me, once I had the time and space.
They did not.
Instead, I re-wrote the first page over and over, thinking I had to get it perfect before I moved on. (And it was far from perfect.)
It was an incredibly disheartening time and I was sure I'd made a terrible mistake.
But I learned some important lessons about writing a first draft - which I've gone on to use in the seven novels I've written since.
